As the Radio Teleswitching System (RTS) is set to be deactivated on July 1, urgent calls have been made for Ofgem to prepare a crisis plan. Currently, 392,000 households remain with outdated meters, threatening power loss when the system is switched off. Simon Francis, from the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, expressed significant concerns about the implications for older adults, noting potential hardships such as heating and hot water issues. Industry representatives have admitted that replacement efforts are inadequate within the remaining timeframe, demanding action from Ofgem and energy firms.
We've heard nothing from industry about which of those scenarios might happen with the RTS switch-off, and it could be a combination of different issues.
The process is doomed to failure, and we are not going to see the RTS switch off on the first of July.
There's a need for industry and Ofgem to present a crisis plan to address what's going to happen on the first of July.
392,000 households are still at risk of having obsolete RTS meters as the deadline to change them approaches.
