Keir Starmer is set to address an international summit in London focused on organized migration crime, advocating for people-smugglers to be treated as terrorists. He highlights the need for over 40 countries to collaborate effectively, sharing resources and intelligence to combat the human trafficking crisis. Starmer reflects on his past experience as the director of public prosecutions, emphasizing successful international efforts in foiling terrorism plots. The UK government’s strategy aims to curb irregular migration, with proposed policies to combat trafficking routes and penalize businesses employing undocumented workers.
Starmer will urge representatives from more than 40 countries to cooperate across national borders to stop smugglers just as they did to stop terrorists.
When I was the director of public prosecutions, we worked across borders throughout Europe and beyond to foil numerous plots, saving thousands of lives in the process.
I believe we should treat organised immigration crime in the same way. We've got to combine our resources, share intelligence and tactics.
Ministers will mark the opening of the summit with a range of new policy measures, including 30m to tackle global trafficking routes and illicit money.
