To tackle prison overcrowding, Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood is considering implementing mandatory chemical castration for serious sexual offenders. This reform comes amidst a broader sentencing review led by former justice secretary David Gauke, suggesting flexible sentencing and eliminating short sentences, except for domestic abuse cases. Gauke noted that these changes could potentially create 9,800 more prison spaces, aimed at enhancing public safety and reducing reoffending rates. He emphasized the need for an evidence-based approach to chemical castration, recognizing its potential but also its limitations.
"One of our recommendations is that we think that we should continue to explore this, this is drugs that reduces sexual desire."
"I'm not going to claim it's the answer for everything. This is about reducing the risk of reoffending in future."
