Starmer hails parental leave changes as putting dignity back at heart of work'
"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"These reforms, a central part of Labour's flagship workers' rights package, will introduce unpaid parental leave from an employee's first day in a new job. Separately, bereaved partners are also set to gain further paternity leave rights from April under new laws. This means fathers and partners who lose their partner before their child's first birthday will be eligible for up to 52 weeks of leave."
The Independent solicits donations to fund on-the-ground reporting across reproductive rights, climate change and Big Tech, producing investigations and documentaries while keeping reporting free of paywalls and relying on supporters who can afford to pay. The Prime Minister described upcoming parental leave reforms as putting "dignity back at the heart of work." The reforms will introduce unpaid parental leave from an employee's first day in a new job, form part of Labour's workers' rights package, and are expected to give 1.5 million parents greater flexibility to share childcare. Bereaved partners will gain further paternity leave rights from April, allowing up to 52 weeks' leave for those who lose a partner before a child's first birthday. The changes will be laid in Parliament after the Employment Rights Act received Royal Assent in December, and some 390,000 people are estimated out of work because of caring responsibilities.
