Turkish police have arrested Ekrem İmamoÄlu, the mayor of Istanbul and a leading opponent of President ErdoÄan, in a significant move against the opposition. This detention comes shortly after the revocation of his university diploma which could prevent him from running in upcoming presidential elections. İmamoÄlu's party, the Republican People's Party, is preparing for candidate elections where he is the only contender. The crackdown also targets opposition alliances that have been critical of the government, exacerbating fears of political repression in Turkey.
I love you all very much, I entrust myself to my nation. Let everyone know that I will stand tall.
The move comes days before İmamoÄlu's Republican People's Party (CHP) is set to hold presidential candidate elections.
The 'city consensus' is an agreement between İmamoÄlu's opposition CHP and the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Freedom and Democracy Party to support the same candidate.
Istanbul's Chief Public Prosecutor's Office said İmamoÄlu aided the work of the PKK by knowingly participating in urban consensus activities.
