During a recent national disaster recovery tour, President Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) by suggesting he might eliminate the agency entirely. He criticized FEMA as being inefficacious and overly bureaucratic. Despite his complaints, Trump met with California officials to discuss federal disaster relief following significant wildfires and received a warm welcome from Governor Gavin Newsom. The California wildfires have caused substantial damage, with estimates of the costs ranging between $250 billion and $275 billion.
"FEMA has been a very big disappointment," Trump said, adding that the agency - which employs more than 20,000 people across the US - was "very bureaucratic," "very slow," and "cost a tremendous amount of money."
After Hurricane Helene hit the US in late September, FEMA received both criticism and praise for its work.
