Over 160 individuals are missing due to severe flash flooding in Central Texas, with 109 reported fatalities. Governor Greg Abbott stated that 161 individuals are unaccounted for specifically in Kerr County, emphasizing the urgency of search operations. The floods, described as horrific and unprecedented, have resulted in a significant loss of life, including 30 children. Meteorologists had previously warned about the risk of flooding, but the intensity of the rainfall exceeded expectations. A disaster declaration has been signed by the President, who plans to visit the affected area.
"Just in the Kerr County area alone, there are 161 people who are known to be missing," Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said at a news conference Tuesday. "We will not stop until every missing person is accounted for."
"There are far more fatalities than there were in Hurricane Harvey. That's how catastrophic this is," Abbott said. "This is beyond anyone's comprehension right now."
The incident was among the deadliest flood events in the past 50 years and shook the region in a scene that Abbott has described as 'nothing short of horrific.'
Meteorologists last week had cautioned that there was potential for flooding late Thursday and early Friday across Central Texas, the most flash-flood prone region in the country.
