Two people reported seeing a possible shark before a swimmer disappeared off Pacific Grove near Lovers Point. Just after noon, a full water rescue response began for a 55-year-old woman and involved local police, the U.S. Coast Guard, Monterey Fire, the county sheriff's office, and California State Parks. Rescue workers used boats, drones, and a helicopter. Unconfirmed shark reports and a possible attack led to closure of all beaches within a mile of Lovers Point. Witnesses reported a large splash and one observer said a shark breached the water with what appeared to be a human body in its mouth before submerging. The Coast Guard said there is no confirming evidence linking the sighting to the missing swimmer and will continue searching into the morning.
