An ISIS gunman ambushed U.S. personnel in the city of Palmyra, Syria, killing two U.S. service members and one U.S. civilian and injuring three other service members. The attack occurred on Saturday and is under investigation. The gunman was killed by partner forces. U.S. personnel were conducting a mission to support counterterrorism operations and were concluding a key leader engagement when the shooting occurred. Since October, CENTCOM forces have advised, assisted, and enabled more than 22 operations against ISIS with partners in Syria, resulting in five ISIS members killed and 19 captured. The incident follows the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the lifting of U.S. sanctions a year earlier.
