Some victims were shot in the streets; one of the deceased was an online car-hailing driver. Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigations and the Crime Detection Tracing Unit launched a manhunt. Multiple recent bar shootings have killed and injured dozens. South Africa recorded almost 26,000 homicides in 2024, with firearms the leading cause and many weapons illegal despite strict gun laws.
