A shelter village provides a bridge to permanent housing
""It was very horrible, a very horrible experience. I was living in a tent with my dog. It was just, all in all, a horrible experience, very cold this winter.""
""Literally hundreds of people would drive by it every single day. And that's when the community started to say, 'you know, it's not okay that we have people who are stuck outside.'""
""We started to say very loudly, 'it's not acceptable that our neighbors don't have any other legitimate options than to try and survive in a tent in a parking lot.'""
Matthew Stone experienced severe hardships living in a tent during a harsh winter in central Illinois. The city of Bloomington opened The Bridge, a tiny house community, to provide private spaces for those experiencing homelessness. A housing shortage, worsened by an influx of new residents seeking jobs, led to increased homelessness. Local leaders emphasized the urgency of addressing the crisis as many people lived in a downtown church parking lot, prompting community awareness and action against the unacceptable living conditions.
