Nathalie Fontanet, the president of Geneva canton, expressed concerns about the potential impact of US funding cuts on international organizations based in the city. Geneva, hosting around 40 global institutions and over 400 NGOs, plays a critical role in international diplomacy. Fontanet criticized the Swiss Federal Council's inadequate response to threats against multilateralism, emphasizing that the city's reputation is at stake. Although Geneva aims to support essential NGOs financially, Fontanet warned that it could not fully cover the financial void left by the US withdrawal, describing the situation as a tsunami of challenges.
"Given the attack on the values that define the international organisations and NGOs that we welcome on our soil, the few reactions from the Federal Council last Friday do not seem to me to be up to the challenge."
"I have not heard any reaction or commitment on the threats to multilateralism. Switzerland's image is likely to be weakened or revised if we ultimately let everything that has been built weaken."
