Burning Man attendee airlifted after possible electrocution
"A festivalgoer at Burning Man was treated for a potential electrocution and airlifted to a trauma center Tuesday night amid stormy, wet weather in Nevada's remote Black Rock Desert. The Pershing County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that the man had "potentially been electrocuted" after stepping into a puddle on Tuesday evening. After medical teams responded, they determined the man needed more care and he was airlifted to a trauma center, Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen told the Reno Gazette-Journal. The Burning Man Project did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but an update posted to the festival's weather and traffic dashboard and X at 10 p.m. Tuesday warned Burners to take additional precautions during the storm."
""If you are in Black Rock City: Keep an eye out for lightning, take care of your camps, and stay safe," it reads. "The playa is too wet to drive. Do not drive. Keep all cables, plugs, and generators dry and covered. Elevate connections and seal them with electrical tape. Never run a generator or powered gear sitting in water.""
"The Burning Man festival has been hit with back-to-back weather phenomena in recent days. Over the weekend, high winds toppled structures and damaged artwork. Rain that followed left the desert landscape a muddy mess for the tens of thousands of attendees."
A festivalgoer at Burning Man was treated for a possible electrocution after stepping into a puddle and was airlifted to a trauma center Tuesday night. Pershing County medical teams responded and determined the injured man required higher-level care. Burning Man organizers posted a weather and traffic advisory warning attendees to watch for lightning, protect electrical connections, and avoid driving on the wet playa. The advisory specifically urged elevation and sealing of cables, keeping generators out of water, and not driving on the mud. Recent high winds toppled structures and damaged artwork, and subsequent rain left the desert muddy. The festival gate closed temporarily during rain and lightning and reopened the following morning.
