Football is about family, he said in an early scene in the Netflix series Last Chance U, which documented the Laney Eagles' 2019 season, which followed their victory in the California Community College Athletic Association championship a year prior."
John Beam, 66, was shot on Laney College's campus and died after being hospitalized. A suspect, identified as 27-year-old Oakland resident Cedric Irving Jr., was arrested early Friday morning. Beam served as Laney College athletics director and previously coached Skyline High School football for 22 years, winning numerous league championships. He led Laney's program after 2004 and appeared in the Netflix series Last Chance U, which covered the Laney Eagles' 2019 season following a state championship. Beam retired from coaching last year to focus on his athletics director role. Family expressed devastation and gratitude for support.
