Cop hurt, 2 charged after pursuit in catalytic converter thefts, prosecutors say
"He has a complete disregard for lawful authority and the safety of others. Cruz refused to stop, speeding at more than 90 mph, prosecutors said at the two men's arraignment Sunday at Suffolk County Criminal Court in Central Islip."
"During the pursuit, a police officer's feet became tangled, and he fell to the ground, suffering a broken fibula. The injury requires surgery, taking the officer off the job for several months."
"Cruz and Acosta both face charges of assaulting a police officer, stealing car parts, property damage and resisting arrest. Cruz faces an additional charge of fleeing police."
Henry Cruz, 25, and Luis Acosta, 23, were arrested after allegedly stealing catalytic converters from vehicles in Lindenhurst. When police attempted to stop their Maserati SUV early Saturday, Cruz refused to stop and drove at speeds exceeding 90 mph. Police deployed stop sticks to disable the vehicle, and all four occupants fled on foot into a wooded area. During the pursuit, an officer fell and broke his fibula, requiring surgery and several months off work. Cruz and Acosta face multiple charges including assaulting a police officer, stealing car parts, property damage, and resisting arrest. Cruz faces an additional charge of fleeing police. Both pleaded not guilty and bail was set at $75,000 and $50,000 cash respectively.
