'Deeply disturbed': Officials investigating 'human swastika' at Bay Area school
"The photo of the students went viral and showed eight students laying on the ground, forming the symbol. According to KNTV-TV and the Los Angeles Times, the social media post also had an antisemitic 1939 quote from Adolf Hitler. Silbergeld told SFGATE that the photo was "a disturbing and unacceptable act of antisemitism." She said school officials identified the students but they can't be named publicly because of federal law."
"In addition to filing a police report, Silbergeld said she plans to collaborate with the Anti-Defamation League, the Bay Area Jewish Coalition and the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Bay Area to respond to the photo and "work to repair the harm caused." The school is also implementing "educational approaches to help students understand the history of the Holocaust and impact of hate symbols, hate speech, and antisemitism," she added."
"Robert Bravo, superintendent of the Campbell Union High School District, which includes Branham High, told SFGATE in a statement that his office will help the school move forward. "I find the human swastika posting created by Branham students tremendously alarming. It is unquestionably anti-semetic and unacceptable," he said. SJPD said it received a report about a hate crime on Dec. 5, two days after it happened, and it is an active investigation."
On Dec. 3, eight Branham High School students formed a human swastika on the campus football field, producing a viral photo. The social media post included an antisemitic 1939 quote from Adolf Hitler and has since been deleted. School officials began an investigation after receiving an anonymous tip, identified the students but cannot name them publicly under federal law, and filed a police report. The principal plans to collaborate with the Anti-Defamation League, the Bay Area Jewish Coalition, and the Jewish Community Relations Council to repair harm and implement educational approaches about the Holocaust and the impact of hate. The SJPD opened an active hate-crime investigation.
