CROWN HEIGHTS - POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING WHY A MAN REPEATEDLY SLAMMED HIS CAR INTO the Chabad World Headquarters on Eastern Parkway on Wednesday night, in what the NYPD is calling a possible hate crime. There were no injuries reported as of press time Thursday morning, and the driver, who was wearing shorts in frigid weather, was arrested on the scene.
The man drove into a side entrance of 770 Eastern Parkway, the Hasidic movement's headquarters, then reversed before accelerating again into the entrance multiple times. The impact knocked a door off its hinges as a crowd gathered, according to footage that was shared widely. No one was injured in the incident, which took place at 8:45 p.m. as the Chabad community marked the anniversary of the death of the movement's penultimate leader, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson.
Toronto police are investigating vandalism at a north end synagogue in what its rabbi says is the 10th such incident over the past year and a half. Police say officers responded to reports of smashed windows at the Kehillat Shaarei Torah temple on Bayview Avenue early this morning. Officers arrived to find four of the synagogue's windows smashed. Police describe the suspect as being in their late teens to early 20s with a thin build, short dark hair and wearing dark clothing.

In a statement relating to the latest incident, a Metropolitan police spokesperson said: On Friday 29 August an officer reported seeing racist graffiti inside Charing Cross police station. Specifically, the graffiti was in a toilet area accessible to officers, staff and other people with access to that part of the building. An investigation was immediately opened into a hate crime and is being carried out in liaison with the directorate of professional standards.
Novato police arrested 33-year-old David Slattery Friday morning after he crashed his car into the Islamic Center of North Marin and allegedly attacked someone inside the mosque. As KTVU reports, an officer was patrolling the area when he heard a crash on the 7000 block of Redwood Boulevard around 11:30 am Friday and ran to investigate, according to a press release from the department.
Because it's an Islamic centre, because of the sensitive nature of that location, this is a place of worship, it's a place where people from the Islamic community gather, of course we're considering that this may be hate motivated," he told CBC Toronto on Friday.
