Fatal shooting near Sawgrass delays opening of gates at Players Championship
"St Johns County sheriff, Rob Hardwick, said the suspect, whom he identified as Christian Barrios, shot two people multiple times about 10:30pm on Friday in the parking lot of Walgreens in a domestic violence situation. The store is located about a mile away from the course."
"He said canine units pursued Barrios on to TPC Sawgrass property. Hardwick said Barrios, who turned 32 on Saturday, at one point picked up a PGA Tour radio and later dropped it. He then stole a black BMW, and Nassau County authorities in the far northeastern tip of Florida pursued the car and forced a crash into the woods."
"Hardwick said Barrios had a long criminal history and knew the victims, both of whom were shot multiple times and taken to the hospital where they died."
Christian Barrios, 32, shot two people multiple times around 10:30pm Friday in a Walgreens parking lot about a mile from TPC Sawgrass during a domestic violence incident. After the shooting, canine units pursued him onto the golf course property. Barrios picked up a PGA Tour radio before stealing a black BMW and fleeing. Nassau County authorities pursued the vehicle and forced it to crash into the woods, after which Barrios fled on foot before being apprehended. The Players Championship delayed public gate opening until 9am due to operational considerations, though the third round at 8:15am proceeded without delay. Both victims were hospitalized and died from their injuries. Barrios has an extensive criminal history.
