Newark Liberty International Airport faces significant challenges due to technological disruptions and staffing shortages, prompting Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to warn of potential similar issues at other U.S. airports as summer travel ramps up. Following a brief radar outage and equipment-related ground stops, Duffy announced plans to meet with major airline leaders to discuss flight reductions at Newark. He criticized the lack of attention to outdated air traffic control systems and connected Newark's struggles to systematic issues that could affect airports nationwide, emphasizing a need for modernization and safety assurance for travelers.
When asked whether it remained safe to fly out of Newark, Duffy maintained that "we are the safest airspace," and asserted his family's regular travel through the airport.
Duffy emphasized that the country has not adequately focused on improving "antiquated systems" at major airports, linking Newark's issues to "stress on an old network."
Duffy warned that the disruptions seen at Newark could occur in other U.S. airports, asserting, "What you see in Newark is going to happen in other places across the country. It has to be fixed."
