Since the collision on January 29, 2025, between an American Airlines flight from Wichita and a military helicopter on a training ride, military pilots have had to broadcast their precise GPS-based location data to other aircraft and to air traffic control, something they frequently skipped before the crash. The FAA has also barred all but the most essential helicopter traffic along the Potomac near the airport.

The federal government has picked two companies to replace 612 radar systems nationwide that date back to the 1980s as part of a multibillion-dollar overhaul of the nation's air traffic control system. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and the Federal Aviation Administration said Monday that contractors RTX and Spanish firm Indra will replace the radar systems by the summer of 2028.

Millions of travelers are about to be stuck in a government-directed slowdown of air travel as the strain grows on unpaid and overworked air traffic controllers. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that, starting on Friday, officials are cutting 10% of flights at 40 US airports. The aviation analytics company Cirium compiled a list of about 100 potentially affected airports. Six have so far confirmed to Business Insider that they are among the 40, including Anchorage, Atlanta, Charlotte, Seattle, Boston, and Philadelphia.

Even after the resumption of flights, travelers were instructed to check the status of their flights.
