Frigid temperatures and snow are expected across the U.S. this week
Briefly

This week, millions of Americans are bracing for frigid temperatures as an Arctic air mass moves southward from Canada. The National Weather Service forecasts record-low temperatures and hazardous conditions, especially in the northern Great Plains, where wind chills could plummet to -60°F. Heavy snowfall is also predicted across multiple states, with some areas in Kansas and Missouri expecting over 8 inches. The extreme cold, following a storm that caused casualties in the South, poses life-threatening risks, especially in North Dakota and surrounding areas.
Forecasters anticipate that wind chills between -30 and -60 degrees will take shape over the northern Great Plains and last for several days.
These extreme conditions can cause frostbite within minutes. The cold could be life-threatening in parts of western and central North Dakota.
