Alireza Doroudi, a University of Alabama doctoral student originally from Iran, has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) due to alleged national security concerns following the revocation of his student visa. The detainment raises questions about the targeting of international students, particularly in relation to pro-Palestinian protests. Despite the controversy, the university maintains that international students are valued, but privacy laws limit the information they can disclose. The university’s International Student and Scholar Services has stated they support international students amidst this situation.
"ICE HSI made this arrest in accordance with the State Department's revocation of Doroudi's student visa," a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted, emphasizing the government's role in this situation.
"International students studying at the University are valued members of the campus community..." the university stated, highlighting their importance despite the ongoing legal issues surrounding them.
