'In moments like this, we see the best of Rhode Island': Leaders react to Brown shooting
"The firefighters, the policemen, the civil leaders, neighbors who come together, and let us celebrate that community,"
"Two are looking down on us right now from heaven,"
"I just want to pay my respects to everybody."
"I'm heartbroken by the news of a horrific mass shooting at Brown University and sending love and prayers for the victims, their families, and the entire Providence community. We must act now to end this painful epidemic of gun violence. Our children should be safe at school.- Ed Markey (@SenMarkey) December 14, 2025"
A mass shooting occurred at Brown University during final exams Saturday night, killing at least two people and wounding nine others. The gunman fired more than 40 rounds from a 9 mm handgun in a classroom in the Barus & Holley building, which houses the School of Engineering and physics department. Political leaders including Senators Jack Reed, Elizabeth Warren, Ed Markey, and Chris Murphy, and President Donald Trump issued statements expressing grief, honoring first responders, and calling for community solidarity and action. Officials and leaders emphasized the need to protect students and to confront ongoing gun violence.
