Journalist Jeffrey Goldberg has publicly challenged Mike Waltz's assertion that they have never communicated, highlighting a viral photo of them together. Goldberg insists his phone number was in Waltz's contact list legitimately, and mocking Waltz's claim of it mysteriously appearing in a Signal chat. Waltz's spokesperson countered Goldberg’s claims, asserting that Waltz has met numerous individuals during his congressional tenure and questioning Goldberg's credibility. This public dispute underscores ongoing tensions surrounding their differing political affiliations and perspectives.
"This isn't 'The Matrix'. Phone numbers don't just get sucked into other phones," The Atlantic magazine's editor in chief said in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker.
Waltz, a former Florida congressman, claimed last week that he's never spoken with or met Goldberg - a prominent critic of President Trump - even though a viral photo shows the men standing together at a 2021 event.
"I understand why he's doing it. But you know, this has become a somewhat farcical situation. There's no subterfuge here. My number was in his phone."
National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes denied Goldberg's claim. "Mike does not know Jeffrey Goldberg and does not recall ever meeting him," Hughes told The Post.
