Kansas lawmakers reverse veto of ban on transgender care for minors
Briefly

The Kansas legislature has overridden Governor Laura Kelly's veto on a bill that bans gender-affirming care for minors, aligning Kansas with numerous other states implementing similar restrictions. The governor expressed concern over parental rights and medical care access. The ban affects hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and surgical procedures for those under 18, reflecting a growing trend in state legislatures to restrict transgender health care. Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson indicated this move signifies a departure from Kansas's previous stance as a 'sanctuary state' for transgender youth.
'Infringing on parental rights is not appropriate, nor is it a Kansas value,' Kelly wrote last week in defense of her decision. 'It is not the job of politicians to stand between a parent and a child who needs medical care of any kind.'
'Today, a supermajority of the Kansas Senate declared that Kansas is no longer a sanctuary state,' Senate President Ty Masterson (R) said in a statement posted Tuesday on social media.
