Louisiana person is the first U.S. bird flu death, health officials say
Briefly

Health officials have stated that the deceased individual, who was older than 65 and suffering from underlying health issues, came into contact with sick and deceased birds from a backyard flock.
Since March, there have been 66 confirmed bird flu infections in the U.S., with previous cases being mild and primarily affecting farmworkers exposed to sick poultry or dairy cows.
Health officials indicated that a genetic analysis suggested the H5N1 bird flu virus may have mutated in this patient, possibly exacerbating the severity of the illness.
While this is the first confirmed human case in the U.S. connected to backyard birds, officials are currently not aware of any other similar cases in Louisiana.
