Hadi Matar, 27, was convicted of attempted murder for stabbing author Salman Rushdie during a public lecture in New York in 2022, causing serious injuries, including permanent blindness in one eye. Matar's attack was linked to a fatwa against Rushdie due to his novel "The Satanic Verses." He also attacked moderator Henry Reese. Matar faces 25 years in prison, and further federal charges related to terrorism have been filed. Rushdie, in his latest book, recounted the traumatic event and reflected on the life-altering impact it had on him.
Last July, Matar was charged with terrorism offenses... The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of New York alleged Matar was acting on a fatwa issued by Iran's Supreme Leader over Rushdie's novel.
Rushdie has since spoken out about the stabbing... he had a dream that he was publicly stabbed just two nights prior to the incident, and he almost cancelled the event.
