In June 2021, Renata Flot-Patterson discovered her daughter Keli Mornay and her infant son had been shot to death after Mornay filed a restraining order against her abusive ex-boyfriend. Homicides of pregnant and postpartum women are more common than any obstetric-related cause in the U.S., with Mississippi leading in pregnancy-related gun deaths. Approximately 15 out of every 100,000 births in Mississippi result in deaths from gun violence. Domestic violence during pregnancy increases the risk of fatal outcomes for women.
