Musk says on X that feds must explain what they did last week - or resign
Briefly

Elon Musk announced that all federal employees will be sent emails asking about their weekly productivity, threatening to consider non-respondents as resigned. This initiative aligns with former President Trump's advice to be more aggressive in reducing the federal workforce. The move raises legal concerns since federal law requires voluntary resignations, as indicated by experts. Many federal workers are experiencing anxiety and sorrow due to recent layoffs orchestrated under Musk’s leadership, which has intensified fears among remaining employees about their job security.
"All federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week. Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation," Musk stated.
"Tens of thousands of their probationary colleagues fired under a joint Musk and Trump bid to radically shrink the government, which is being spearheaded by Musk's U.S. DOGE Service."
"If the government decides to treat employees who don't respond to the email as having resigned, that would be illegal, said Nick Bednar, a professor of law."
