New U.S. Vehicles Must Have Rear Seatbelt Alarms by Late 2027
Briefly

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has established a requirement for new vehicles to emit warnings if back-seat passengers are not wearing seatbelts, starting September 2027.
The upcoming rule also includes enhanced warnings for driver and front-seat passengers, which will come into effect on September 1, 2026, further promoting safety.
In 2022, the seatbelt use rate was significantly higher for front-seat passengers at approximately 91.6% compared to about 81.7% for back-seat passengers.
Currently, around 47% of vehicles from the model year 2022 already offer a rear-seatbelt warning system voluntarily, indicating a shift toward greater safety features.
