Opinion | The Supreme Court Can't Save America, but Here's What It Can Do

The Supreme Court recently ruled that the Trump administration must facilitate the release of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia from an inappropriate detention center. Abrego Garcia, who has lived in the U.S. under protective status since 2019, was sent to a facility in El Salvador wrongly. The Supreme Court's order emphasized the need for the government to clarify its compliance with the court and to provide updates on actions regarding Abrego Garcia’s release. Despite this, the Trump administration seemed to openly resist fulfilling the court’s directives, raising significant concerns about the rule of law and the treatment of individuals in similar situations.

The Supreme Court held that a Federal District Court judge, Paula Xinis of Maryland, had properly ordered the Trump administration to facilitate the release of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia.

The Supreme Court's order contained two directives: to clarify the government's directive and to prepare to share information about Abrego Garcia's release.
