Pam Bondi Responded to Alex Pretti's Murder by Criminalizing Spitting - emptywheel
"Some of them are violent, and some of these prosecutions might even survive - that is, if the affidavits used to obtain the arrests are accurate, as many (if not most) of the ones arising from Stephen Miller's invasions have not been. Some of these claimed assaults occurred three weeks before the charges were unsealed, the day of Renee Good's shooting, three weeks in which prosecutors chose not to present the charges to a grand jury."
"The more stunning thing, however, is that four of these "violent assault" affidavits significantly include spitting. Felony spitting at Whipple What is described as "drone footage and photographs" (which sounds like an effort to retcon what happened) identified Kirubele Adbebe, "on federal property spitting on at least one passing government vehicle, kicking tires, and opening the trunk of a moving government vehicle, in violation of 6 C.F.R. 139.35." That's why they decided to arrest him - the spitting and the alleged trunk-opening."
Sixteen individuals were arrested on federal charges alleging violent assaults on federal officers and property under a press release titled "Sixteen Defendants Charged with Violently Assaulting Federal Officers and Property." Some defendants face clearly violent allegations while others rely on affidavits of uncertain accuracy. Several claimed assaults occurred up to three weeks before charges were unsealed and coincided with the day of Renee Good's shooting; prosecutors did not present those charges to a grand jury during that period. Two Homeland Security Investigations officers attested to all affidavits. Four affidavits notably allege spitting; video evidence is limited or lacking in several cases.
