"If you could have been with the family when we had to notify them of finding the child, you would know in your heart that there was no foul play,"
"It's just one of those tragic things that can happen and does happen."
"Again, when you've got people who are responsible of this child who needs constant, constant care and surveillance, every day, every minute of every day, year in and and year out, for years on end, there's the potential for one human error, one simple misjudgment, one accidental time falling asleep, it's all it takes,"
On November 19, 5-year-old Neymir Luka Valere, a nonverbal child on the autism spectrum, wandered from his Port St. Lucie home and ran to a nearby lake where he drowned. A neighbor's doorbell camera captured him running by at about 4:40 p.m., but he was not reported missing until 8 p.m.; searchers located him in the lake that night. Elopement is a common safety risk for young children with autism. In similar cases parents can face wrongful negligence charges disproportionately based on race or socioeconomic status. Police characterized the death as a tragic accident and emphasized the relentless vigilance required of caregivers.
