A recent discussion in the California State Capitol highlighted a significant divide among Democrats regarding transgender athletes participating in female sports. Republicans invoked Governor Gavin Newsom's recent stance to support proposed bills banning such participation. Newsom, historically an advocate for L.G.B.T.Q. rights, stated he believes transgender participation in female sports is unfair, creating tension within his party. Despite this, Democrats in control rejected the bills after extensive public testimony, marking a rare partisan split on L.G.B.T.Q. issues amidst typically aligned party positions on social matters.
For the first time ever, Gavin Newsom and I agree, said Karen England, executive director of the Capitol Resource Institute, a conservative advocacy group.
Mr. Newsom has not publicly weighed in on the transgender sports bills, and his office declined to comment on Tuesday.
Democrats, who control the Assembly Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports and Tourism, ultimately quashed the bills after dozens of people spoke in a packed hearing room.
The debate brought into stark focus an extraordinary rift among California Democrats on the issue of transgender participation in female sports.
