Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is actively mediating global conflicts, exemplified by his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding Russia's war in Ukraine. This meeting highlights Saudi Arabia's emerging role as a neutral ground for diplomacy during complex international issues. Analysts note the kingdom's decision to remain neutral in the West's sanctions against Russia while maintaining humanitarian aid to Ukraine has bolstered its position as a mediator. The upcoming talks between Ukraine and the US in Saudi Arabia signal its growing influence in Middle Eastern diplomacy.
"Saudi Arabia has indeed established itself as a platform for dialog in the last two to three years," Sebastian Sons, a senior researcher for the German think tank CARPO, told DW.
"In Saudi Arabia's foreign policy strategy, it currently plays a very important role to talk to everyone," he added.
"Saudi Arabia's neutrality has led to its current mediating role," Mohammed Kawas, a London-based political analyst, told DW.
"The country refrained from joining the West's criticism and sanctions against Russia, while it was also in regular contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy..." Kawas explained.
