Police intensified their search Wednesday for a suspect after Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a 47-year-old physicist and fusion scientist at MIT, was shot Monday night at his Brookline apartment and died Tuesday at a local hospital, the Norfolk District Attorney's Office said. The prosecutor's office said the homicide investigation was active and ongoing as of early Wednesday afternoon and had no update; earlier they had said no suspects were in custody. Dozens of people gathered outside Loureiro's building with candles to honor his life and support his family, and neighbors received notices asking them to place candles in their windows. The FBI said it knew of no connection to a nearby unsolved Brown University shooting.
