Recovery efforts for four missing U.S. Army soldiers in Lithuania are underway as their vehicle remains submerged in thick mud and water. The soldiers, from the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, went missing during a training mission on March 25. Recovery operations are complicated by the vehicle's massive weight, having sunk 13 feet below the surface in a bog. A specialized Navy dive team has begun working to access the vehicle, but heavy mud has hindered progress. Efforts continue to attach hoists to recover the armored vehicle from its muddy entrapment.
"It is highly complex trying to get to the vehicle itself with the terrain out here and where the M88 is sitting in a bog swamp-like area, below the waterline," Brig. Gen. John Lloyd stated.
"Last night, divers were in the water trying to get to the vehicle. We were unable to because of the amount of mud," Brig. Gen. Lloyd commented on the challenges faced.
