A severe storm system affecting the central United States has resulted in over two dozen tornadoes and extensive flooding rains. Meteorologists warn of continued heavy rainfall through the weekend, especially around Arkansas and Tennessee, with total accumulations potentially exceeding 15 inches. This raises concerns for catastrophic flooding, especially as 83% of flood damage occurs during high-risk weather predictions. While tornado frequency peaked on Wednesday, the threat of severe storms persists, impacting states across the Deep South and into the Northeast.
Going forward, three-day totals are likely to reach between six and 12 inches, on top of what has already fallen over Arkansas, southeastern Virginia, western Kentucky and western Tennessee.
We are pretty worried, about as worried as you can get, said Jimmy Barham, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Little Rock, Ark.
