President-elect Donald J. Trump has announced he will nominate Billy Long, a former Missouri congressman, to lead the Internal Revenue Service, pledging to fire its current leader.
Long has promoted a pandemic-era tax credit riddled with fraud, saying in a podcast that he and his associates have yet to have a claim denied by the I.R.S.
The Employee Retention Tax Credit was established by Trump and Congress in 2020 to help businesses during the economic shutdown, yet has cost the government billions in fraud.
The Biden administration invested heavily to modernize the I.R.S. and enhance tax collection efforts, which included appointing Daniel Werfel in 2022 to lead a significant overhaul.
