President Trump's administration has begun significant cuts to Voice of America (VOA) and related government programs aimed at promoting democracy. Following a recent funding bill, the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees VOA, saw its entire staff placed on leave, an unprecedented move in the organization's 83-year history. VOA's director, Michael Abramowitz, lamented the silencing of the agency, emphasizing its role in providing objective news to those under oppressive regimes. Reporters Without Borders condemned the cuts, asserting they undermine the U.S. commitment to free information.
For the first time in 83 years, the storied Voice of America is being silenced. Virtually the entire 1300-person staff was placed on leave.
VOA promotes freedom and democracy around the world by telling America's story and providing objective and balanced news and information, especially for those living under tyranny.
This decision is a departure from the U.S.'s historic role as a defender of free information and calls on the U.S. government to restore VOA.
We expected something like this to happen, and it just happened to be today.
