US Navy divers have attached hoist lines to a sinking M88 Hercules vehicle in Lithuania, which is currently four meters underwater due to a challenging bog terrain. The vehicle was carrying four US Army soldiers who went missing during a maintenance mission. Recovery efforts are complicated by the terrain, with a RAIL system expected to arrive to assist with the stabilization of the ground. Winching operations are anticipated to be lengthy and difficult, as the vehicle continues to sink into the mud.
Engineers expect to start winching early this morning, but the process will take significant time and effort due to the challenging terrain surrounding the peat bog.
It is highly complex trying to get to the vehicle itself with the terrain out here and where the M88 is sitting in a bog swamp-like area.
