Weather abnormality delays more than 100 flights at SFO
"An atypical wind pattern has delayed 165 flights at San Francisco International Airport, or about 15% of Friday's flights, according to Doug Yakel, a spokesperson for the airport. As a cold front descends on the Bay Area, the winds at the airport are blowing opposite their typical direction, delaying arrivals at the airport. At noon on Friday, flights were seeing a delay time of around 40 minutes, Yakel said."
"With Friday's storm rolling in, the winds are blowing southeast and are also blowing more powerfully than normal. "We have this low-pressure system moving in tonight," Kennedy said. "Ahead of the cold front, we'll see, basically, that pressure gradient tighten, so faster winds, which is most likely why delays are being caused at SFO. We have both that south to southeast early wind, and then they're a lot faster than they normally are because of the storm.""
An atypical wind pattern has delayed 165 flights at San Francisco International Airport, representing about 15% of Friday's scheduled flights. A descending cold front has pushed winds to blow southeast and more powerfully than normal, reversing the typical north-to-northwest coastal breeze. At noon flights averaged about 40-minute delays, below the FAA-estimated SFO average of 111 minutes, but delays are expected to lengthen as wind-related backups continue. Planes must land into the wind, and southeast landings at SFO are inefficient and require larger spacing between aircraft. Travelers are advised to sign up for airline notification services for delay updates.
