Sixteen states have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its proposal allowing the sale of forced-reset triggers for semiautomatic rifles. These devices, which could increase the fire rate of rifles, are viewed as machine guns by the Biden administration. The lawsuit highlights concerns regarding public safety and potential increases in gun violence. The case was filed in Maryland, led by several state attorneys general. Additionally, a settlement was reached permitting the sale of these devices, while restricting their manufacture for handguns and requiring the return of previously confiscated items.
The lawsuit, which was announced on Monday, argues that the return of the triggers would violate federal laws, endangering both residents and law enforcement personnel.
The Biden administration had previously argued the triggers qualify as machine guns under federal law because constant finger pressure on the triggers will keep a rifle firing.
