The Trump administration is set to lay off about 6,000 employees at the IRS as part of broader workforce cuts. This move has prompted concerns about the impact on tax returns, service levels, and revenue collection from high-income earners. Rep. Seth Moulton emphasized the irony of the situation and cautioned that such layoffs would undermine taxpayer support and safety. Meanwhile, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and others have urged the administration to reconsider, fearing delays in refund processing and a decline in taxpayer service due to staffing shortages.
Attempts to cut IRS funding are quite ironic coming from the guy who Trump hired to focus on efficiency. Mass IRS layoffs would likely just translate into less revenue collected from wealthy tax cheats and slower return times for the majority of ordinary Americans who follow the rules and file their taxes on time.
They're asking if it's safe to even file their taxes with the IRS. To think that our own executive branch is scaring people away from paying their taxes ... it's absolutely insane.
Americans need the IRS to be fully staffed with employees who can answer their questions, process their returns, send them refunds, and keep law enforcement efforts intact.
Reductions in IRS staff would delay tax refunds, impact taxpayer service, and harm law enforcement efforts.
