Sarah A Boardman, a British artist, is facing career-threatening backlash after US President Donald Trump criticized her portrait of him, labeling it the 'worst.' Trump claimed the painting, which hung in the Colorado state capitol for six years, was purposefully distorted while praising Boardman's portrait of Barack Obama. In her response, Boardman asserted her commitment to artistic integrity, disputing the accusations of bias and distortion. She expressed concern over the impact of Trump's allegations on her business, noting a significant shift in public perception following his remarks, leading to her portrait's removal from display.
Boardman said Trump's comments meant that her intentions, integrity, and abilities were, in my opinion, called into question.
She rebuked the president's claims in a statement, saying she had completed the portrait accurately, without purposeful distortion, political bias, or any attempt to caricature.
The additional allegations that I purposefully distorted the portrait, and that I must have lost my talent as I got older, are now directly impacting my business.
For the first six years after she painted the portrait, she received overwhelmingly positive reviews, but since Trump's comments that has changed for the worse.
