Mark Lorenzo Villanueva, a 28-year-old resident of Long Beach, was arrested for allegedly sending money to ISIS and expressing his willingness to fight for the group. He communicated with self-identified ISIS fighters via social media, indicating a desire to join the fight. Villanueva offered payments to support ISIS and sent a total of $1,615 through intermediaries overseas. An FBI raid revealed what appeared to be a bomb in his possession. He is charged with attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization and faces up to 20 years in prison.
Villanueva allegedly communicated with two self-identified ISIS fighters through social media, pledging allegiance and expressing desire to fight for the terrorist organization.
In online communications, Villanueva said he owned a bomb and knives, and the FBI recovered what appeared to be a bomb from his bedroom when he was arrested.
Villanueva sent payments totaling $1,615 over the course of five months through two intermediaries overseas, asking whether it would help pay for resources for ISIS.
