CHP to protect ex-VP Kamala Harris after Trump pulls Secret Service detail, sources say
Briefly

Kamala Harris will receive dignitary protection from the California Highway Patrol after President Donald Trump revoked her Secret Service protection. Trump signed a memorandum ending Harris's protection as of Monday. Former vice presidents usually receive six months of Secret Service protection; President Joe Biden had extended Harris's protection to July 2026 at her aides' request. Without the extension, her security detail would have ended last month. Governor Gavin Newsom would need to sign off on CHP protection; his office declined to confirm security arrangements. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the move revenge and said she would work with the governor to ensure Harris's safety. The Secret Service, CHP and LAPD do not discuss details of dignitary protection deployments.
Our office does not comment on security arrangements.
The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.
This is another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings, the revoking of security clearances and more. This puts the former Vice President in danger and I look forward to working with the governor to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles.
