Elias: Neither Newsom nor Trump doing enough to rein in dangers of AI
"Trump doesn't want Newsom or anyone else getting involved with this issue, which has seen some forms of AI encourage children toward unhealthy eating, other self-destructive behaviors and even suicide. The idea, the president's aides said, was to prevent states from passing "onerous AI controls" that could let China create more advanced forms of this technology than U.S. firms like Google and OpenAI."
"Yet Trump has so far done nothing to rein in any harmful effects of AI, not even proposing a single reform. In reality, his move was just another knee-jerk reaction to prevent Newsom from taking leadership in a significant area and getting another leg up on Republicans in his still undeclared 2028 run for Trump's current office. One other reality: Newsom has not done nearly enough to protect Californians from some threats posed by AI, threats anticipated in science fiction stories as long ago as the 1940s. Yes, he did sign a few new laws that will help a bit here, but there is nothing existential among them."
President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the federal government to assume all AI regulation, a response prompted in part by California Gov. Gavin Newsom's recent state bills. The federal move was framed as a way to stop states from imposing what aides called "onerous AI controls" that might advantage China and rival U.S. firms. Trump has not proposed concrete reforms to address AI harms despite evidence of some AI encouraging unhealthy eating, self-destructive behaviors and suicide among children. Newsom approved several modest laws, including age prompts for new devices and warning labels about mental-health effects, but those measures fall short of comprehensive protections.
