Ted Hui, a former pro-democracy legislator in Hong Kong, has received asylum in Australia after being wanted by authorities in Hong Kong. Hui expressed gratitude for the protection visa granted to him and his family. Since the imposition of the national security law in Hong Kong, dissent has been suppressed. Despite the bounties placed on him by Hong Kong authorities, Hui continues to advocate for other jailed activists. He urges the Australian government to take further actions to support Hong Kong activists and address their plight on an international level.
I express my sincere gratitude to the government of Australia both present and former for recognising our need for asylum and granting us this protection.
Australia must do more to rescue them and to speak up for their humanity. Its stance matters internationally, and its protection of Hong Kongers sets the tone.
