During a recent discussion hosted by NOTUS, CBS News's Major Garrett openly criticized President Donald Trump for banning Associated Press reporters from White House events. He argued that this action undermines Trump's proclamations regarding free speech, especially after Trump declared an end to government censorship in his address to Congress. Garrett noted that while the president might enjoy controlling media access for a time, it ultimately makes him appear weak. This situation is reinforced by conflicting actions from the White House, including threats against funding for schools regarding protests and restrictions on diversity programs, which have faced legal pushback.
The spat with the AP fundamentally makes the president look much weaker than I think he realizes. He doesn't need to keep the AP out. Come on. That is undercutting everything he said last night about removing censorship and government control over speech and access.
Mr. Trump signed an executive order purporting to protect free speech, but he has taken a number of other actions that arguably curtail speech.
